Research Centre for Educational Innovation and Development (CERID)

Research Center for Educational Innovation and Development (CERID) is a leading educational research institution that from its inception has charted distinct pathways to research as well as academic excellence. It has been aptly described as the pioneer educational institution broad in scope, open and accessible to all. CERID was established in 1975 under the National Education Committee as wings of government to carry out innovations and research to upgrade the quality of education. Later, in 1979, it was handed over to Tribhuvan University (TU) with a view to play a dynamic role to streamline the efforts in upgrading the quality of education under the academic environment of TU with core professional researchers. The Tribhuvan University Organization and Educational Administration Regulations 2050 B.S. Section 7 has clearly stated the provision of the center and since its establishment, CERID has carried out significant research and innovative activities that have contributed to the development of education and the nation.  It dedicated itself to the human resources development for nation building through educational research, training and innovation. It is committed to the promotion of quality education and research competency. In course of its development, it has experienced autonomy under the decentralization policy of TU and, it currently operates in accordance with the Tribhuvan University Decentralization Rule 1998/1999. CERID has been functioning as a leading educational institution that provides the government with policy recommendations that have been translated into major educational programs and plans. As envisaged in the Regulations, CERID has been carrying out research works of academic importance that are of national interest. Today, CERID remains unique research institution for generating knowledge and educational innovation as a distinguished research center in Nepal.

Main objectives

There are a series of specific objectives (ends) and actions (means)to enhance excellence in five central domains or goal area of the center: educational  research (basic, secondary and higher education policy, technology and content); ECD, Non-formal and informal education; research and development; educational governance, evaluation,  management and monitoring; capacity building (human resource development, trainings); Seminars/ workshops/ dialogues; research infrastructure development and strengthening; public services; and  staff and organizational stewardship.

Specific Objectives

  • To generate knowledge by undertaking evidence-based research and innovation activities for linking education for development

  • To facilitate education policy formulation, planning and implementation

  • To build institutional capacity in educational sector

  • To disseminate and share research experiences and information

Institutional Network

CERID has  professional and institutional network with the prominent international institutions and organizations that raised the prestige of TU for example it  has Institutional Network with UNESCO, UNESAF, Save the Children, National University of Educational Planning and Administration (NUEPA), Asian Network of Training and Research Institutions in Educational Planning (ANTRIEP), International Institute for Educational Planning (IIEP),IDRC/Canada, CIDA/Canada, University of Alberta-Canada, University of Massachusetts-USA, John University of Liverpool-UK, ILO, ICIMOD, NORAD, British Council, APEID/Bangkok, Korean Educational development Institute (KEDI) SEOUL, SANN Research Institute of Colorado/USA, the World Bank, and Asian development Bank.

Areas of Research and Innovations

  • Sustainability of CERID and funding for research.

  • Strengthening and expanding collaboration with government of Nepal (Ministries, Departments, and NPC), UGC-Nepal, Universities, and different Faculties and Institutions of TU.

  • Persuading university authorities for regular funding for research activities

  • Generating funds through research proposals for innovative action research in different aspects of both school and higher  education 

  • Setting research priority with focus  to improve the quality of education 

  • Focusing dissemination of  research, sharing knowledge, ideas, and experiences of national and international importance targeting the stakeholders who are not reached before

  • Initiating dialogue sessions focusing implementation of educational policies and programs endorsed by the government and universities by addressing contemporary issues in education

  • Increasing institutional capacity by creating research plat form for  researchers with high profile

  • Coordinating with different development partners of education and development

  • Upgrading of research infrastructures including  library and documentation conducive to research and development

Current Research Activities

CERID has carried out significant research projects and innovative activities since its establishment that have contributed to the development of education in Nepal with support of various national and international organizations. It has also contributed to increasing the literacy rate though formal and non-formal education by conducting number of action researches in the field of basic and primary education, quality of education, mother tongue education and life skills for girls and marginalized groups. Now, CERID has given importance to researches related to quality higher education through the promotion of research culture.

CERID is committed to involving itself in the development of education through conducting research on various pertinent issues and undertaking innovations and training programs to meet the changing needs of the country. Now, CERID has been working as per the plans set under second strategic plan (2018/19-2022/23) , this   is in fact in tune with the broader frame of the five years strategic plan of Tribhuvan University. CERID is on the path to develop the research culture for quality higher education. Currently, it is strongly articulated that CERID should endeavor to maintain its historical role and contribution in facilitating the governments’ efforts in strengthening the national education system. The plan document should be instrumental in creating an environment for ensuring access to new and indigenous knowledge and enhancing approaches to research based activities on the road to link education to development and change.
